Claire hit the books and computer for an hour and a half doing school work, then we all his Ross' (Joshua's favourite store in the States!) and got Claire decked out in DKNY, Tommy Hilfiger and Polo Ralph Lauren. She's pretty happy!
We hit the road and travelled down nearly to the border of Mexico and headed east. We knew we were close to the border, as we were accompanied on the radio to the music of Herb Alpert and the Tijuana Band! Memories!

Our stop on this journey was Dateland, a tiny place in the middle of nowhere where, you guessed it - they sell dates - big dates, small dates, candied dates, date snow globes ... all the way to date-themed Christmas ornaments. Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette blared through the Musac machine.

Claire has been mapping our trip on two maps, one a small California map, the other a large USA map so she's getting a good understanding of where we've been and where we're going.
We had meaning to stop off at Montezuma Castle but we couldn't find any accommodation at all at Camp Verde, nor any of the towns surrounding it. So we drove for the extra hour to Flagstaff and found accommodation in a Motel 8 right on Route 66. It was not as salubrious as our other accommodation but we got two very welcome beds for the night.
